All-State Weekend

Do you know the way to San Jose?

We do, but a huge storm dumped several inches of rain throughout Southern California on Friday, flooding roads, creating sinkholes, and causing mudslides which had closed lanes on both of the freeways (US-101 and I-5) that we could take to San Jose. The three of us left just after 6:00AM on Saturday morning and decided to head up the 101, only running into scattered rain on the way.

Only three? M didn't come with us because he had flown to San Jose on Thursday to participate in the All-State Honor Band - thus the reason for our weekend road trip...

When we got to San Jose, we first made a quick stop at Santa Teresa County Park for (what else?) a passport stamp for the Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail. Oh, and some Pokémon, too! Then we met some friends of ours from college for lunch - it's been more than 10 years since we last saw each other!

Great to see you, D and D!

And even though we were still pretty full afterwards, R, J, and I decided to try a little something from Falafel's Drive-In, since we were close by and this was our only opportunity to check out this "Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives" place. The falafel was pretty good, but we should have gotten some sauce to go with them and the pita chips.

From here, we headed east to downtown San Jose to check into our room at the Marriott, and then met some of the families of the other All-State musicians from our high school for dinner at Original Joe's. Delicious Italian food and great company! All of the students (800+) were being housed and fed at the Fairmont Hotel as part of the California All-State Music Education Conference (CASMEC), so we wouldn't get to see our kids until the evening concert.

Two of M's friends performed (on clarinet and trumpet) on Saturday night with the All-State High School Orchestra. They sounded so amazing and had only been rehearsing together since Thursday afternoon! Such talented musicians!

We were back again at the Center for the Performing Arts on Sunday morning for M's concert. He (trumpet) and another friend (clarinet) performed with the All-State High School Symphonic Band. I might be just a little biased, but they were superb! So proud of M and his friends - they represented our high school music program well!

Can you spot M in the middle of the pic?

Bravo!

R's college roommate and his family also came out to watch M perform. After we signed M out from the conference and checked out of our room, we went out for lunch together at Hukilau. Tasty Hawaiian BBQ - loco moco, saimin, and spam musubi! And filled in what little space was left in our stomachs with shave ice from the cafe next door.

Gotta catch 'em all!
After saying goodbye to our friends, we hit the road and headed south. But instead of driving all the way home, we spent the night in Paso Robles. After dinner (pizza from Rustic Fire), the boys decided to go exploring around town... for Pokémon!

And to wrap up our mini road-trip, this morning we took a tour of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Pretty campus! Hopefully the dreary weather didn't put a damper on M's impression of the school!
