Climb Every Mountain

One of the things that was on our must-do list for Oʻahu was a pillbox hike. So after we finished lunch, we drove over towards the windward side of the island to tackle the Kaʻiwa Ridge Trail up to the Lanikai Pillboxes in Kailua.

The trailhead, which is basically a public easement over private property, is located in a residential area. Due to the popularity of this hike, as well as nearby Lanikai Beach, street parking is extremely limited.

After a couple of unsuccessful loops through the neighborhood attempting to find a spot, I dropped the guys off to hike without me since I wasn't really feeling up to it anyway. I ended up in the empty parking lot of Kailua Intermediate School for a much-needed nap!

Here are some of their pics from the hike...

Afterwards, they were still up for squeezing in a hike to Makapuʻu Point before the end of the day. Two miles roundtrip (500 ft. elevation gain) on a paved surface with a couple hours of daylight? No problem, even for me! So we hopped onto Kalanianaʻole Highway (Hwy. 72) and drove to the southeasternmost point of the island.

On our way back to the condo, we stopped at Costco to pick up some goodies to take home with us, and we ordered a pizza to go from Boston's Pizza Hawaii Kai for dinner.

We're flying home on the red eye tomorrow, so we have one more day in paradise.
