Switching Sides

After the game last night, we came back to the Cal for a late dinner at Market Street Cafe. Since they start serving their oxtail soup after 9:00PM, folks were already lined up around the corner into the casino. By the time we got seated, it was almost 10:30PM, but R's oxtail soup and my chili rice came to the table pretty fast. Needless to say, neither one of us was hungry this morning.

So we skipped breakfast, checked out, and hit the road back to California. But instead of going home, we headed straight for the big rivalry game between #7 USC and #16 UCLA at the Rose Bowl, with a quick stop at Freddy's in Victorville for lunch.

We arrived at the Parson's parking lot in Pasadena about the same time as M and J, so we all rode the shuttle bus over to the Rose Bowl together. However, once we got there, the boys were off to hang out with their friends at the ASCE tailgate, while R and I found his cousins, tailgating with other USC faithful. They had a huge spread - I'm amazed at the people who do this all the time because they definitely have the whole tailgating thing down to a science!

Afterwards we met up with the boys to head into the stadium. Since J has a Den Pass, he was able to buy extra tickets in the student section for us and M, plus several other friends. The downside was that we were only assigned to a section, so we were packed in tight. Because security was having a hard time managing the influx of people before kickoff and during the 1st quarter, everyone was jammed at the mouth of the tunnel by our section. Watching this all unfold was kind of worrisome because there would have been no way to exit if there had been an emergency!

As expected, it was a high-scoring game, since neither team really has a good defense. We also figured that it would come down to whomever had the ball last. UCLA had a chance to win (or at least force overtime) with about 2 minutes left, but DTR threw an interception (his fourth turnover today) which sealed the victory for USC, 48-45.

While we felt bad for our Bruin sons, we were happy that B could get the win against UCLA in his final college season. We'll be cheering for him (but not USC) in the Pac-12 Championship!
