Alphabet Soup

In case anyone is curious, the designations for the 394 units within the national park system are listed below. National parks can only be established by an act of Congress. However, the president may designate and protect areas as national monuments by executive order under the Antiquities Act of 1906.

N PRES - National Preserve (18)

NHS - National Historic Site (78)
NHP - National Historical Park (45)
N MEM - National Memorial (28)
IHS - International Historic Site (1)
N RES - National Reserve (1)
NH RES - National Historical Reserve (1)

NB - National Battlefield (11)
NBP - National Battlefield Park (4)

NRR - National Recreational River (1)
NSR - National Scenic River or Riverway (4)

WR - Wild River (1)
WSR - Wild & Scenic River (2)
NST - National Scenic Trail (3)

Other Designation (11)

NHT - National Historic Trail
NST - National Scenic Trail

Not all trails are administered by the NPS, which is why they are not counted among its 394 units. Some are managed by or in cooperation with the US Forest Service or Bureau of Land Management. There are many non-NPS locations which have cancellation stamps for the trails or other affiliated sites. In the pursuit of collecting passport stamps, we've found lots of cool little museums, state parks, and other visitor centers that we otherwise might have passed by.
