Interview with the Road Trippers

With this trip, we've visited 86 of the 397 National Park Service units, and the boys have earned 68 junior ranger badges! In keeping with tradition, here's the debrief of our latest adventure...

In the 3 amusement parks we've visited, what are your favorite rides (top 3)?
M / R: Millennium Force (CP), Tatsu (MM), Raging Bull (GA)
J:  Maverick (CP), Wonder Woman Lasso of Truth (MM), Ninja (MM)
Me: Millennium Force (CP) x3, because it's the best one of the few I could ride that didn't make me sick!

What was your favorite attraction (non-amusement park)? Why?
J: Pro Football Hall of Fame -- it's sports; I knew some of the players; the Super Bowl movie was cool
M: National Museum of the United States Air Force -- big airplanes; lots of weapons, guns, bombs on display
Me: Cuyahoga Valley National Park -- even though it's right next to urban Cleveland, visiting there feels like it's another time/place; it must be gorgeous in the fall
R: Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park / Air Force Museum -- all of the aviation history there in Dayton, as a whole, was really amazing

What would you NOT want to do again? Or do differently next time?
Me: Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame -- it was interesting, but once is enough
Boys: First Ladies National Historic Site -- no place to sit down during the tour.
R / J: Rent a bigger car!

Comparing this trip with last summer's, which would you pick as your favorite?
R: Last summer -- saw tons of cool stuff
M: This summer -- amusement parks!
J: This summer -- amusement parks were fun; Uncle K came with us
Me: Last summer -- not as H-O-T; driving our minivan; less complaining

What was one of the best things you ate?
Me: The peanut butter/banana/cream cheese grilled sandwich at Melt
Boys: Steak 'n Shake and PoPo's green onion pancakes
R: Sweet corn

What was your favorite ice cream?
Boys: Dairy Queen Blizzards
R / Me: Jeni's Splendid Ice Cream, but it's pricey!

What were your impressions of the University of Illinois?
M: Boring, not interesting (Editor's note: clearly, somebody's paying his own way through college)
J: Pretty cool; liked the Union
R: Best place ever, it's where we met!
R / Me: Some things have changed, but even so, it still seems the same!

Where was the best place to swim/get wet?
R: Morton Pool
M: Splashdown
J: Our cousins' pool in Chicago
Me: Logger's Run at Great America

For a good laugh, at some time be sure to ask one of us to tell you about...
  • ...why J's new moniker is "Snickers"
  • ...how we decided who would have to share a bed with M
  • ...the squirrel we saw at Gebhard Woods State Park
  • ...what I did when riding Millennium Force
  • ...what the boys found when "picking" through their dad's stuff
  • ...why M should be very afraid the next time we see our friends from college
  • ...the "junior anger book"

Sounds like a great trip! I, of course, would suggest the Carolina's because then you could see us and we have a pool in the backyard. There is lots of Civil War stuff in South Carolina, so check things out. We would love if you came to visit sometime!
